Q&A with Brenden Starr

Q: Brenden! Thanks for taking the time to chat about “Flatline.” It’s an incredible song, and I’ve got to know what your favorite part about it is because I already know mine…that beat drop and hard guitar at the beginning and the POWERFUL chorus! You left me breathless.

BRENDEN STARR: One of my favorite parts is the chorus in this song, It’s just fun to sing, and the one high note vocal run that I do at the end of the song I always look forward to because it’s so hard to do and I love the challenge when I get to that part.

Q: I’d appreciate it if you walked me through your creative process for composing “Flatline.”

BRENDEN: When my producer [and I] were writing this song, I wanted something edgy, but something that influenced a little bit of hip-hop or R&B feel, but still get the edge there when we got to the courses it rocks out, its a blender feel in the writing process I would say.

Q: What kinds of reactions have you received regarding the track?

BRENDEN: A lot of people like the pop-punk feel that it has and they talk about the heavy beats, the verses, and the sing-along course, it sticks in your head.

Q: How would you describe your relationship with your music? I know it’s a weird question, but I’ve had some artists claim they view their music like their children. Others have a love-hate relationship with their music. So, what’s yours like?

BRENDEN: My relationship with my music is like sometimes a job punching a time clock and then punching out taking some breaks clocking back in. You know it’s gotta be like a job if you’re gonna treat it like a career and I also tend to write like I’m running a marathon for my next catchy hook or single. It’s a race to the finish line so I would say there’s a healthy relationship, lol.

Q: When you’re gearing up to work on an original piece, how do you get into that songwriting space and remain in it?

BRENDEN: Usually when I go in the studio I look at two or three different songs of lyric sections or choices and get the story process in my mind, I usually try to build off of a strong chorus, sometimes it happens, sometimes it goes off of a verse or an intro, I’ve had a time in the studio when I was in the booth and I just spit the chorus out right there, and that made the song!

Q: Out of all of the songs you’ve released, which one would you say holds a special place in your heart? It could even be one that hasn’t been released.

BRENDEN: I actually have a couple that are very special to me, they are already out on my current album but there’s this new single that’s coming out next month on my new upcoming EP called “Reimagine,” the single “Get Out,” I had a friend that passed away that inspired me to write this song about addiction struggles.

Q: How do you want your art to impact people?

BRENDEN: If I want my music to impact people, I would want it to pull the listener in, and understand how much feeling and passion I put into my presentation of my lyrics and my storytelling in my songs, I like to think I can hit you with some highs and lows, and whatever feelings or mood you’re in it’ll be a good show regardless.

Q: Is there anything you want to say to your listeners?

BRENDEN: Yes, on August 30 my new EP “Reimagined” comes out on all platforms, and my new single “Get Out,” on August 23.
