“Girl Code” by Edie Yvonne

Fans who follow any artist at any stage of their careers can only hope to see the type of content rollout Los Angeles-based artist Edie Yvonne has given over the past couple of years. With consistency both in the volume of their music released and the quality of their work, coupled with the incredible direction we see their career heading, she has climbed to the top of her fans’ playlists all over the globe. As she releases her first full EP this week, the end result could not be more impressive. A soulful and personal collection of her art, the 15-year-old phenom truly defines her genre. Headlining the record, the titular single “Girl Code” stands out as a true representation of the young artist’s proclivities and abilities.

Starting with a soft and rhythmic beat, the song sets a precedent for a smooth and message-driven piece ahead. A quick pause in the track cuts the volume and from there the song ignites. A wave of upbeat bass and synthetic overtones create a sentimental mood as we unpack our own feelings alongside Yvonne.

Allowing herself to be vulnerable through her lyrics, she tells the story of young friendships turning sour as she learns the lesson that some ties are best severed. Singing “You always have my back just to stab it, you go find me a boy just to grab him. Fighting in the dark, I don’t know who you are” she fortifies this point and through it gives herself closure.

While her music provides the same visceral response as a traditional pop piece, the artist’s personality shines through to give it an elevated meaning. With so much accomplished already, we look forward to the next chapter of work that is sure to come from this artist’s meteoric rise.
