“Pretty” by Chandra

In a world of perpetual anxiety and self-doubt, Brisotl, UK-based pop-rock project Chandra’s music stands as a beacon of hope and optimism, determined to bring a little more joy into the world with every song they release. Not since Michael Franti has anyone made such determined strides to use their music as a vehicle to champion the belief that positive thinking and a general love for humanity can bring the change we all want to see in the world. As the band celebrates the release of their debut EP, “Lifted,” their single “Pretty” proves a standout anthem in the record and reminds us all to cherish the identity that is our authentic self.

Set to an upbeat and catchy rhythmic accompaniment, the lyrics of the piece serve as an unconditional affirmation that despite our insecurities, everyone deserves to feel comfortable putting their most genuine foot forward. Lines like “We should be who we are, that’s what I call pretty” and “I should be free to be me” serve as reassurance and give us permission to be human in a time when identities have become so homogenized.

As the song progresses, we feel our anxiety melt away with every verse. Prompted by this music, we realize an urge to reexamine our sense of self and through that, perhaps even the expectations we put on others, be they conscious or not. With an unabashed philosophy of tolerance and embracing the human condition, the underlying motivations of this young project are admirable at a minimum. It is cause for celebration that these artists have momentum on their side, as we eagerly await what could be coming down the pipeline next.
