Hip-hop artist Hollow Profit (Aka Brody Burke) is known for his sleek style and black-and-white aesthetic. And his latest tune is right on track: it fleshes out what it’s like to be living the high life.
Given the fact Hollow Profit is practically dripping in noir, it comes as no surprise that the artist has followed suit with this single “Sicilian Gold” which starts with the main character walking down the street decked out in all-black leather.
The svelte tune features Detroit’s Own Golden Armada, Ronnie Alpha. Known for his production and hip-hop vocals, Alpha takes the track one notch higher.
“Sicilian Gold” is a unique combination of modernism and vintage romanticism. The wall-of-sound-type female backup vocal samples are fuzzed out and lo-fi. They are then combined with a catchy boom-bap beat, which creates an unexpected synergistic feel. The nostalgic sweetness of the background harmonies directly contrasts the dark timbre of the artist’s rapping and confident, sensual aura.
“Sicilian Gold” feels as if you were walking down the street in the 1960s (buying anything you want along the way, of course). It’s romantic, it’s dark, it’s edgy. Most importantly, it’s contagious.
Something about the quality of the track reminds us of the big towns of the Midwest (Chicago, Detroit) but also, of classic 1990’s French hip-hop. The combination of dark Western European vibes paired with big Midwest suburbanism scratches the musical itch just right. That’s to say that “Sicilian Gold” is 11/10, a gilded earworm.
As the song progresses, a collage of imagery floats into our minds: leisurely dancing. If you’re looking for a chill tune about feeling yourself, vibe out to “Silician Gold” next.
