“Church“ by Roam Like Ghosts

“Church” is a uniquely impactful alt rock album by Roam Like Ghosts. Each song has an intimate and acoustic backbone, built up by rocking drums, mellow grooves, and powerful guitars. The album is aptly named, because Roam Like Ghosts creates an almost spiritual experience for the listener through the vulnerability and connection offered in these songs. They give their audience a place to sit and listen to their emotions, process them, and leave the album feeling transformed.

The opening track, “Death and Me,” begins with only layered vocals singing “oh can you see the light, it’s on the other side, where everything will be alright.” This immediately sets the stage for the hopeful tones present throughout the album. Though Roam Like Ghosts delves into tense and painful emotions, there is always a current of optimism in these songs, and a true belief that things can get better. After these lines are repeated, upbeat drums and riffing guitars drop in, leading the listener to that place “where everything will be alright.”

From high energy tracks like “Death and Me,” to slower swaying tunes like “So Hard to Say Goodbye,” this album offers a journey through many different soundscapes and emotions, all the while staying cohesive and inviting. The closing song, “Somnumbra Atra” is a beautiful and satisfying end to the album. Pretty guitar picking, grumbling synth bass, and sparkling instrumental melodies take the stage for this non-lyrical track. Roam Like Ghosts have told their stories throughout the album, and this lyric-less last song allows the listener to decide their own story.
