Milwalkie-based power pop duo The Pulltops have spent decades together working on their craft and their chemistry, and continue to amaze fans with their ingenuity with every release. Prompted by their love of eclectic styles of influences, the duo has found a way to keep their music fresh throughout the years, but as they get ready to cap off another year, they take possibly their most unexpected turn yet as they get their yuletide spirit out of storage and put it on full display in covering the 17th-century holiday classic “On Christmas Day (I Saw Three Ships.)” To say the artists took a creative approach to crafting this track would be an understatement, but the familiar undertones of the sound these artists have become famous for amongst their fans truly define this vision.
The piece starts out with an impassioned introduction as the world of the music is built around us. A quick percussive line introduces a chorus of electrifying string momentum and the tune takes on a strong pop punk identity from the get go. As the vocals are introduced, we feel the sense of urgency to let the spirit of the music and the season overtake us as the familiar lyrics “On Christmas day in the morning” repeat, the message resonating with listeners more and more with every verse.
Thematic tonal embellishments of sleigh bells are peppered throughout the record, reminding listeners that holiday spirit can be found alive and well in any sector of life, and driving home the messages of love and joy the artists strive so hard to convey through their work.
