“Maybe We Lost It“ by Alex Starling

“Maybe We Lost It” by Alex Starling, London based singer-songwriter, opens with intimate and atmospheric drums that set the steady rhythm for the track. Cinematic synth chords join in next, followed by rhythmic oscillating synth textures, which envelop the listener in a transformative sonic landscape all within the first thirty seconds. In this song, Starling looks at the overwhelming and hard to define feelings of change. As you grow, perspectives on life and the people around you shift and warp. Sometimes, even beliefs you held infallible for years can be shattered within a few days. “Maybe We Lost It” beautifully delves into how disorienting that kind of change can be, and how it is difficult to know how you’re supposed to navigate it.

The chorus opens with the line “so you wanna be somebody else instead, hope you’ll still be someone that I love.” This poignant statement examines the strange emotions of knowing people in your life can change so much that they don’t seem like themselves anymore. Change is natural, but at what point are they not the same person you loved at the beginning of the relationship? Starling grapples with this confusion and fear over the ethereal atmosphere crafted by the production.

The quickly delivered, repetitive melodies of the bridge create a moving intensity as the production swells around them. The heightened tension of this section gives way to palpable emotion, ominously representing Starling’s desperation to understand the change in this other person, and if that change is going to make them permanently unrecognizable.
