“Day by the Lake” by Elle is an acoustic folk EP with introspective lyrics and immersive production. Elle, a musician and composer from England, paints vulnerable landscapes with her intimate vocals and captivating narratives, backed by fluid, cinematic arrangements.
The first track on the EP, “Bad Attitude” is a meandering piano ballad about someone who is trying, and failing, to accept that other people’s perceptions and opinions are out of their control. Most everyone has probably struggled with caring too much about what others think at some point in their lives. At a certain point, though, it becomes your responsibility to make that change and cultivate a confidence within yourself. Elle sings the straightforward line “you can’t control what others think about you” as an impactful reminder that you will probably never be fully satisfied with how other people perceive you, but it’s not something you should be trying to control. In the closing line, “you try not to care, but the pain is still there, cause you’re not ready to change,” Elle reveals the harsh truth that you alone can cure your insecurities and let go of the weight of outside opinions.
After an EP full of gorgeous strings, classical piano, and folk storytelling, the title track closes this body of work with bouncing piano and warm, inviting vocals. Nature can offer solace from confusing relationships or painful emotions, and lines like “you spend all your days by the lake” and “sometimes the only way is to get away,” reveal a tendency to seek peace through escaping.
