“Mumbling“ by Victòria Vilalta

“Mumbling” by Victòria Vilalta is an indie folk track about feeling overwhelmed by your own thoughts. Vilalta, a singer-songwriter with an aptitude for crafting emotional sonic landscapes, sings about how it feels like her brain never stops thinking- and they are often not the most enjoyable thoughts. Any over-thinker out there will relate to this song, and the feeling of something being wrong in your mind. Inspired by a moment of out of control thoughts, “Mumbling” is the first single off of Vilalta’s debut album, and sets the tone for the intimate and vulnerable music she delivers. 

Vilalta writes about her brain like it is its own entity, and with lines like “seems to be never on my side” and “never runs out of mumbling,” it is clear that she doesn’t feel like she understands her own mind. This poignant songwriting is very representative of anxious thinking, where it does tend to feel like your brain isn’t a part of you, but instead it is controlling you. This frustrating perspective is hard to change, but Vilalta can at least offer you catharsis and comfort through the relatable authenticity in this song.

The track opens with understated, yet impactful, plucked acoustic guitar and lightly tapping drums. This lays the intimate groundwork for the song, and later ramps up in energy in the second verse. The drums play more intensely and the acoustic guitars begin to strum, matching the tension in Vilalta’s mind that becomes more pervasive the longer she cannot get a grip on her thoughts.
