“The Albatross Song (Mellow Like)“ by E.G. Phillips

“The Albatross Song (Mellow Like)” is a cinematic remix of E.G. Phillips original version of “The Albatross Song.” His original version has a rocking, uptempo arrangement, and this new version is much slower and sparser. Though both versions of the song are lovely, and deliver the message well, this mellow, folk version of the track helps the lyrics to really sink in and provides a thought-provoking sonic landscape. With dancing strings, tapping piano, and intimate vocals, E.G. Philips crafts a truly riveting atmosphere, as well as a compelling narrative, with this song.

References to birds like “sparrows” and “chickadees” set the tone for the central metaphor, where Philip says he knows the only companion that suits him is an albatross. Albatrosses are large, oceanic birds that are typically associated with mystery and seafarers. The line “when you’re with an albatross, don’t you know you can’t get lost, cause you’re never truly lost when you are at home at sea” poignantly sums up the themes of the song. This track is an ode to wanderers who can never quite settle, but at the same time, never quite get where they are going.

Strings move beautifully behind the vocal, playing satisfyingly in the background with some impactful moments of drama. Phillips asks the listener “does your restless spirit wander, yet get hopelessly attached?” and “you’re barely bound to this world, yet you dread it’s bound to collapse?” If you answer “yes” to these questions, then you may be best suited to a life on the water, flying with the albatross.
