“I Wish Humans Were Made in a Factory…” by Zachary Mason is a grungy rock song that pulls from classic elements of 90s rock to craft a unique and invigorating sonic landscape. Mason, an artist based in the UK with an aptitude for blending genres underneath compelling songwriting, delivers a one of a kind theme with this track. He puts a new spin on the common lament that building a relationship and family with someone is quite difficult, saying it would be better to just get humans out of a factory.
One of the most universal goals in many people’s lives is to start a family with someone they love. No matter how common this desire is, it does not make it any easier. Building a long lasting relationship with someone is immensely challenging, especially when you introduce children into the mix, which Mason captures poignantly with lines like “angry fathers, angry wives, messed up lives.” His somewhat comical solution, that we should be able to get humans from a factory instead of from our own relationship, is made somber with the gut punch line, “the facts of life are a very painful fact to see.” It can be hard to accept that children don’t come easy, and maybe shouldn’t come at all to some relationships if they can’t be sure they’re ready.
Strumming electric guitars and satisfying electric solos are the standout element of the arrangement, as thrumming bass lines and steady drums build the backbone. The dense drums and soaring instrumental bridge provide a dynamic sonic journey as Mason’s filtered vocals draw you into the landscape.
