“Buckle Up” by Thammarat is a moving piano ballad that tells the painful story of wanting someone who doesn’t want you in the same way. Thammarat got the inspiration for this song after going through an ambiguous romantic situation with someone, where Thammarat wanted a serious relationship, but it turned out the other guy only wanted a one-time fling. This is an unfortunately relatable theme for many of us, where we feel led on, and subsequently betrayed, by someone who doesn’t see us as the real thing. Thammarat offers catharsis and comfort through his vulnerable lyrics and intimate production style.
The track opens with the line “I met you last night at the rooftop bar, you were standing outside looking up at the stars,” painting a beautiful, meet-cute scene that is easy to picture. Thammarat describes the pair immediately connecting and feeling a spark, and the production begins to build along with the emotions. Pretty piano, lovely guitar strums, and subtle vocal layers all work to craft the enchanting atmosphere of the song as Thammarat begins to fall for this guy. He sings “falling” in a drawn out, riff-filled melody that walks down, as if the melody itself is falling. This satisfying choice immerses you in the song and makes you fall with him.
In the second verse, the reality of the relationship hits with the line “I tell you ‘I can be the one that you’re searching for,’ you say ‘I don’t want that.’” All of the production drops out during “I don’t want that,” matching the shock and devastation Thammarat must have felt at hearing those hurtful words.
