“LOVERS, UPRIGHT” & “LOVERS, REVERSED“ by TE/MO

“LOVERS, UPRIGHT” and “LOVERS, REVERSED” by TE/MO is a riveting double EP that explores themes of love and relationships. A follow up to a past double EP from TE/MO titled “TAROT, UPRIGHT” and “TAROT, REVERSED,” these EPs each have six rock songs that weave in indie rhythms and pop melodies for a captivating, twelve song body of work. TE/MO is an indie pop artist from Chicago who consistently delivers captivating instrumentation and compelling narratives in her songs, and she satisfies expectations once again with this double EP.

Many of these tracks blend synth driven arrangements with live sounding instrumentation, offering a unique blend of sonic textures that work unexpectedly well together. TE/MO’s unique artistic vision shines in her creative production and fantastical lyrics, like in the song “NEVERLAND,” which puts a twist on the classic Peter Pan fairytale over a thrumming beat and dancing synths. With lines like “I’m stuck in Neverland, where every day’s the same,” TE/MO turns the tale on its head, exploring the darker themes through a feminist lens as growling vocals and layered ad libs add tension to the song.

Another standout track is “4:15 (i’ll dance),” which talks about the deep love between TE/MO and her sister. With lines like “she always gets there early while I’m racing the clock,” the song opens with descriptions of how the pair is different. But these differences only make their bond stronger, allowing them to always be there for each other. It’s a sweet song with an uptempo, feel good arrangement, letting themes of familial love really sink in.
