“Remember“ by Elise

“Remember” by Elise is a gripping alternative rock track that tells the story of not knowing the best way to help a friend who is suffering. Elise, an indie folk singer-songwriter from Ireland, displays her aptitude for storytelling with this track. Her inspiration came from a situation where a friend needed help, but couldn’t ask for it, and Elise wanted to help, but didn’t know how. These kinds of situations are common and complicated- you never want to overstep, but you also never want to leave your friend to suffer alone. This leads to kicking yourself later, thinking about what you could’ve done differently. Elise poignantly covers all of these conflicting emotions in “Remember.”

Acoustic guitar strumming begins the song and continues as the backbone for the track along with the steady drum rhythm. Another guitar riffs across the arrangement with a unique sonic texture and an ear worm melody. Satisfying harmonies and thrumming instrumentation raise the tension of the track, crafting a riveting energy that matches Elise’s tumultuous emotions. Lines like “I only want to be there for you, but you got me waiting on the outside” show how both parties are feeling lost, unsure of the best way to lean on each other. 

Warbling instrumentation ripples across the chorus, and the final outro has soaring production. Heavy drums and overlapping ad libs heighten the energy and effortlessly carry you through the end of the song. Elise repeats the line “you got me waiting on the outside,” mirroring her desperation to be let in.
