“i hate that i love you“ by Dax

“i hate that i love you” is a vulnerable hip hop song by Dax that tackles difficult topics in the midst of heartbreak. Dax is an honest and innovative artist that merges acoustic instrumentation with hip hop rhythms and rap melodies to craft unique sonic landscapes and compelling narratives. In the music video for this track, we find out that Dax’s ex had an abortion without fully consulting him, and this ultimately leads to the downfall of their relationship. Deciding whether or not to have a child is a huge decision, and can be a tumultuous one if you have to make it unexpectedly. Dax explores the complicated emotions that came with this situation, offering catharsis for anyone who’s gone through a tense breakup.

Lyrics like “wish I never found love ‘cause I never would of lost” and “they could cut off both my arms and I’d still find a way to hug you” show the conflicting emotions that Dax is experiencing. He is still deeply in love with this woman, and can’t seem to move on. He hates that he still loves her, hates how strong their connection was, because now it won’t fade. In the fresh stages of grief, it can be hard to find acceptance in the pain, or any good in the bad.

Electric guitar strumming and a heavy beat carry you through the song, but the highlight of the arrangement is the impassioned vocal performance. Angry, emotional yelling hits you right in the gut, making you feel just how distraught Dax is over this relationship.
