“Requiem” by Gav Moran is a poignant five song EP that takes the listener through ambient soundscapes and beautiful sonic storytelling. Moran is an innovative artist based in Dublin, Ireland, and he recorded this EP in his personal studio. His attention to detail is clear in every layer of the arrangement, from the emotional pianos to uniquely textured synths to cinematic strings. Despite the lack of lyrics, the narrative in each of these songs is very clear, which is a testament to Moran’s strong aptitude for capturing the human experience in sound alone.
Rippling piano opens the EP on the first song, “Requiem,” and is soon joined by mournful violins and haunting cello. The piano is frantic and distraught, the strings are sorrowful and tumultuous. These parts paint the clear image of someone freshly awash with grief, searching for answers, in disbelief that their loved one is gone. For anyone that has lost someone important, this feeling is all too relatable. The loss leaves you immediately untethered, but this song works to ground you again.
Another standout on the EP is the third track, “Acceptance.” In contrast to the rapid melodies of the first track, the piano in this composition is steadier and slower. It paints a lovely landscape of bittersweet acceptance, acknowledging that the person is gone, but the love you shared certainly isn’t. “Requiem” is defined as “an act or token of remembrance,” and this EP offers a beautiful homage to departed loved ones, as well as a moving comfort to those who were left behind.
