“Speak My Mind“ by Strawberry Moon

“Speak My Mind” by Strawberry Moon is a grungy rock track that is impossible to turn away from. Huge instrumentation and powerful vocals take you through the cathartic emotions of this song, in which Strawberry Moon explores existential feelings about growing up without feeling like you’re getting any wiser. Rather than succumb to directionless feelings, though, the narrator here continues to speak her mind and try her best, offering inspiration to all of us. 

Strawberry Moon, a rock band from Richmond, Virginia, showcase their artistic chemistry with the interplay between each instrument and the vocal. With Katie Bowles on vocals, TJ Meade and Liam McElroy on guitar, Gray Stephenson on bass, and Christian Noonan on drums, this band crafts an invigorating sonic landscape that pulls you through dynamic rhythms and captivating performances. The song opens with thrumming bass that sets the scene, soon joined by whining guitar feedback and anticipatory drums. Then, the full rhythm locks in and the guitars start to riff as the gritty vocal performance begins.

Lyrics like “I miss my easy confidence” and “I’ll try to speak my mind” tell us both sides of this narrator’s conflict. She misses who she used to be, but knows she can only go forward. Even though the naive dreaming of our younger selves sometimes seems appealing, there is a strength in embracing change and the unknown, and committing to speaking your mind no matter what. The tenacity weaved into each note, melody, and lyric of this track encourage the listener to do just that.
