“The Elements of NaySoul Vol.1” by Shanay Morant is a dynamic indie R&B EP that grabs your attention and doesn’t let it go until the last beat. Morant is a rising artist from New York, and this five song body of work is her debut EP. With these tracks, Morant worked to cultivate a true sense of creativity and originality, drawing on the four elements to guide her writing. Water, fire, earth, and air are reflected in the soundscapes of these tracks, displaying her connection to nature and her original sense of artistry.
The EP opens with the synth driven track “These Waters.” A heartbeat kick drum offers a backbone for the rhythm as subtle percussion and sweeping synth textures glide through the arrangement. Lyrics like “catch me soaring high” and “dreaming of love” show Morant’s longing for something better. She is hopeful that good things are coming her way, envisioning a change that is just around the corner. She sings “these waters got a hold on me,” expressing how her dreams of the future have an incredibly strong grip on her. She repeats “everything I wanted is coming to me” several times, manifesting her desired reality.
Eclectic production and impassioned vocals are a hallmark of Morant’s sound. Her effortlessly powerful vocal performance provides meandering melodies and catchy rhythms, pulling you through her songs with ease. The EP closes with “What Now,” another standout track on the EP. Built by pulsing synths, a snapping rhythm, and layered vocals, this song is a self-confidence anthem that leaves you with an infectious joy.
