“NOT US“ by Wotts

“NOT US” by Wotts is a high energy indie rock song that showcases the one of a kind sonic landscapes that Wotts works to create. Wotts is a Canadian indie pop duo that draws on contemporary pop and classic rock to craft riveting indie songs that you can’t really find anywhere else. The first single off of their upcoming EP, “FLANK!,” “NOT US” gets you excited for more. Made up of vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Jayem and bassist and guitarist Ricky 100, the artistic chemistry between these two musicians is palpable in each layer of the song’s arrangement.

This track immediately sets an energetic vibe with its full arrangement and unrelenting drums. Uplifting piano keeps the rhythm and provides little melodic trills as enveloping synths dance through the track and provide subtle ambience and ear candy. The chorus ups the energy even more with its crashing hi hats and lively piano. The catchy vocal melodies are a standout element of the track, inviting you to sing along as the quick rhythms hit your ear just right. 

Lines like “you’re gone so we’ll never know” show the narrator coming to terms with a failed relationship, trying to accept that a happy ending is just not for them. There is one short, atmospheric moment before the outro of the song where everything but the vocal and synths drop out, making the slam back into the rhythm all the more satisfying. It is clear that Wotts has a true understanding of how to give the listener a dynamic and exciting listening experience.
