“Breakfast“ by Besides

“Breakfast” by Besides is a dreamy EP that draws on soft rock instrumentation and pop melodies to craft calm and intriguing sonic landscapes. Besides, fronted by multifaceted musician David McGintry, is an alt rock project based in Hong Kong that creates one of a kind lo-fi tunes. The arrangements typically feature textured drums, grooving bass, pretty keyboards, and some kind of atmospheric synth. The vocal performances sound laid back and intimate, drawing you into the soundscape and giving you space to take in the thought-provoking lyrics. Many of the lyrical themes center around positivity through self-reflection and societal reflection.

The EP opens with the title track, “Breakfast.” The drum rhythm is steady and catchy, and the bass line pops out as it weaves its way through the track. The piano is inviting and atmospheric, and a subtle guitar melody dances in your ear to provide a hook that you keep listening for. Layered, calm vocals help add to the ambient and enveloping atmosphere. A notable thing about Besides’ style is that each element of the instrumentation sounds mellow at first glance, but they are all playing immensely satisfying parts that keep the song interesting.  

“Lemonade” is another standout track that closes the EP. The tapping rhythm gives the song its energy as the electronic sounding piano trills. There are moments where the drums cut out and only the synths play, offering slight shifts in the sonic journey that build your anticipation and satisfy your expectations perfectly. Little details like this have a big impact, another hallmark of Besides’ compelling style.
