Hailing from Austin, Texas, Glass Mansions is an alternative rock duo, fronted by Jayna Doyle. With thrilling synths and ground-shattering beats, the new release, “VIOLET” investigates digitial brainwashing and the endless seek for meaning and purpose. Doyle’s sultry vocal is coiled in eletronic flickers, haunting and elevating while the track sonically captures the motion of “on the run.”
Almost a little horror-fused, “VIOLET” opens with suspense, but it doesn’t stop there. Through the thorny alternate pop and almost psychedelic sonic landscape, the track sonically depicts a never-ending chase. Visually, the music video, which follows a woman on the endless run from one thing to another until she’s bleeding out on the ground, sees her waving a gun, running with a load of cash, fleeing from a wedding, riding on the back of a bike, then at the front.
Weaving striking imageries into the song’s rich texture, the music video escalates the metaphors in “VIOLET” into literal and visual scenes. Even covered in blood, the protagonist continues to run, holding a piece of glass until the same glass is inserted into her. “VIOLET” is an unapologetic expression, and it gets under your skin in the most unnerving way, which makes sense since the track was initially inspired by an episode of Black Mirror.
“VIOLET” is the third in the three-part series that explore the themes of escape, grief, and being trapped in the repetition of something. After having dived into the past and examining a self-inflicted restriction, the third track turns its attention to the motion and idea of running and breaking free, but not without a twist.
