Q: .”Hot! Sad! Girls!” is such an iconic title and anthem; what was the exact conversation or moment that birthed this concept?
KATIE MAC: Thank you! So, I came up with the title one morning on my way home from working in the club. At the time, I was going through a lot personally, but I still showed up to my club job and essentially partied for money. I see femininity and sex appeal as very in demand resources, which people can take however they want.
Q: How do you balance humor and fun pop production with genuine emotional vulnerability when writing songs like “Hot! Sad! Girls!”?
KATIE MAC: My therapist would definitely say that I coat most of my emotions in humor, so this question made me giggle. While Hot! Sad! Girls! definitely has an emotional vulnerability to it, I actually felt very comfortable taking the role of commentator rather than the subject of the song, which is why you hear me talking about other hot girls in the lyrics, not myself. I think life in general is full of mess, and it’s way more fun to dance through it rather than get caught up in the heaviness!
Q: .If “Hot! Sad! Girls!” were the theme song for a classic TV show or movie, which one would it fit perfectly?
KATIE MAC: Oh my gosh, love that question. Maybe Coyote Ugly? Anything messy and for the female gaze.
Q:.What is your go-to outfit or accessory that instantly makes you feel confident and ready to conquer the day?
KATIE MAC: I’m a big fan of platforms, so I wear a lot of platform sneakers, crocs, really anything. I don’t like feeling short.
Q:If you could create a signature ice cream flavor named after your music, what ingredients and flavors would be in it?
KATIE MAC: Easy I would create a strawberry margarita flavor that has tequila in it.
Q: What is the weirdest or most random piece of trivia that you know and love telling people at parties?
KATIE MAC:Two sips in and I’m bringing up the Boeing 737 MAX8 for SURE.
