Press Q&A with Stephanie Phillips
Q: What was the core inspiration or life experience that sparked “Walking the Tightrope?”
STEPHANIE: My little brother (6 years younger) died last April, 2 days before his 52nd birthday. Only a month later, I got married to my second husband. It was this time of low lows and high highs that I wrote the song. Inspired by the emotional upheaval in my life, this song helped me process.
Q: The song balances tension and elegance beautifully. How did you approach building that dynamic in the studio?
STEPHANIE: Well, to be honest, I think the song’s own dynamics already had that built in. But it helped that my drummer created his own tension within the song, and my recording engineer has a really good ear! We also deliberately used a click track for this song, even though that’s not typical for me. But, in this case, it helped me lean into the emotion without having to worry about the rhythm.
Q: How do you feel your vocal style in this track reflects your growth as an artist?
STEPHANIE: I’m not sure how to answer this one! I think my voice has become richer over the years, which is a nice way of saying that I can’t hit as many high notes as I used to be able to! Haha! But, in all seriousness, I think the key that I wrote the song in was just a sweet spot for my voice overall.
Q: What line from the song holds the most personal significance for you and why?
STEPHANIE: This one, hands down: “I’ve been walking this tightrope for too many days – I have wept in your arms and then held my bouquet. But, I know that this life is so fraught yet so rich, that sometimes we can’t tell which feeling is which.”
That line truly encapsulates my life last year — it was filled with grief and then with joy…. And I leaned into all the feelings and used them to help me finish writing my album
Q:What was the most challenging aspect of writing or producing this song?
STEPHANIE: Well, as I said, it was written on the heels of much emotional upheaval. On top of that, I really wanted to make sure that it reflected all the feeling I had in writing it when we went to record, especially because the recording process came quite awhile after the writing.
Q:What upcoming projects or live performances can your listeners look forward to next?
STEPHANIE: Haha! That’s always the question, isn’t it? I do have an album release concert at Uptown in West Chester, PA on September 30. Other than that, I am hard at work writing again — for the next album. I also released a single (a new protest song) last week called “How Tall Did You Stand?”
