“Boy + Girl” by Wotts

Ottowa-based indie pop duo Wotts has once again emerged from the studio with their latest track “Boy + Girl.” The final piece of their latest three-single EP “Good People, Bad People,” the work truly serves as a bell-cow example of the group’s musical proclivities and abilities to foster a euphoric yet spirited mood through their art. Featuring an upbeat and funky rhythm while still retaining a pop-inspired sensibility, the single puts listeners into a good-spirited mood and gives fans one last summer jam for the turn of the season.

As the piece begins, rhythmic synthetic sounds pulsate through the speakers, slowly building a world around the music with every beat. A drum introduction soon after introduces the vocals and the smooth tambour of its delivery gives the song wings. With a personal feel in the ambiance, charmingly sprinkled with appropriate embellishments and sound effects that add to the listening experience every step of the way, the sentimental identity of the song is defined immediately.

The musicality of the composition creates a memorable resonance in the best possible way. While the beat proves itself as an earworm staple of any playlist, the artists’ dedication to creating a streamlined beat pays off for the duo and defines its identity. Focused on cultivating positivity in the listening experience, the single sits in the sweet spot of the artists’ intentions. Stimulating but not complicated, catchy but not overpowering, and familiar but unpredictable with every verse, it draws numerous parallels between other titans of the genre such as Tame Impala and Arcade Fire.

While bass and percussion drive the emotional direction of the rhythm, the single is also peppered with fun instrumental solos that put the artists’ dedication as instrumentalists on full display. Through their style of play, we feel the connection the duo has with their music with every line and in turn, it takes on an elevated meaning to us as listeners. Thankfully, the group has no plans of slowing down any time soon as fans can only wait with anticipation to see how they will grow from the momentum of this latest hit.
