“Disengaged b/w Slipping“ by Delta of Venus

“Disengaged b/w Slipping” is a two track release containing “Disengaged,” a dreamy, echoing pop song and “Slipping,” an experimental indie tune. Delta of Venus showcases their impeccable artistry and clear dedication to a unique sonic vision in these songs, especially when you take into account that each of the three members in the band learned brand new instruments at the start of their journey together.

“Disengaged” uses whirling synth stabs, atmospheric guitars, and reverberating vocals to paint the story of someone realizing they need to leave a relationship behind in order to find themself. The line “it was nice to have you here, but I think I need myself for a change” shows how there doesn’t necessarily need to be bad blood between two people for the relationship to have run its course. Finding a personal identity, independent of that other person, can be a transformative experience. The steady journey of this song’s arrangement transforms the listener in the same way, becoming more dense and determined as the story builds.

“Slipping” has a fuzzy guitar intro, melodic bass, and swooping vocals that set the scene for an indecisive story. The line “hold on, let go, I’m slipping” tells us the narrator doesn’t know exactly what she wants. This connects to the previous song in that both the relationship and independence feel important. Repetitive lyrics and building production heighten the stakes and add to the emotion, and beautiful non-lyrical vocals meander towards the end of the song, slipping away into the soundscape of this track.
