“Compromise“ by Aidan Paul

“Compromise” by Aidan Paul is a funky R&B track that draws on multi-genre elements to create a riveting blend of fresh sounds, tied together by catchy melodies and a locked-in rhythm. In this track, Paul sings about a friend of his that always refused to compromise on her values or dreams for a man. The conviction she had inspired him, and this track perfectly captures that admiration in both a lighthearted and meaningful way.

Lyrics like “she really don’t like to compromise” and “if it ain’t right, there’s gonna be a fight” set the tone for this song, clearly painting the image of a woman who will never make herself small in order to make a partner more comfortable. If someone asks her to settle, or to prioritize the relationship over her dreams, she is going to stand her ground no matter what. It’s a stirring sentiment that we could all learn from, a reminder that we have the sole authority over how we live our lives, especially through the particularly poignant line “even if I never find love, I know I can make it on my own.”  

Bouncing, rhythmic piano, a funk groove, and sweeping “ooo” harmonies make this soundscape captivating and fun, providing a backbone for the storytelling to shine over. A trumpet solo provides further intrigue to the arrangement in one part of the song, and it’s actually played by Paul’s dad. With more singles coming out every month this year, leading to a full album in August, Paul has lots of compelling art in store for us.
