Q: Looking back at your track “Better Off Lonely,” how do you feel your mindset and songwriting style have grown between that release and your brand-new single, “Now I Got You”?
SHELBY: I love all genres of music. As an artist, I never want to box myself into just one sound. Over time, I’ve realized that my greatest strength as a songwriter is natural, vulnerable storytelling. “Better Off Lonely”was grounded in that personal narrative, pulling directly from my real-life experiences. With “Now I Got You,” the process was driven much more by pure feeling and vibe. The moment I heard the beat, I immediately tapped into the melody, fun energy, and vibrant colors that I knew I wanted to bring to life visually.
Q: “Now I Got You” brings such a fresh, captivating energy. What was the exact spark or real-life moment that inspired you to write this new track?
SHELBY: The second my producer played the track, my brain lit up with vibrant purples and blues; I could visualize the whole aesthetic right away. The main melody poured out effortlessly from there. I wanted to make something fun that paid homage to the energy of my earlier releases. When I was crafting the lyric “Now I Got You,” I was reflecting on my journey in the music industry. Navigating false promises and people with ulterior motives. Writing this was my way of reclaiming my narrative and taking my power back.
Q: When you were in the studio recording “Now I Got You,” what was your favorite part of crafting its vocal arrangements and overall production vibe?
SHELBY: Having complete creative control over my music is so empowering because every tiny detail can completely shift the trajectory of a song. A single background harmony or ad-lib can take a track in an entirely new direction. My favorite part of the process was building out the initial skeleton, stepping back, and then coming in to stack layer upon layer of vocals to give it that polished, cinematic pop finish.
Q: What is your ultimate go-to studio snack or drink that keeps your energy high while writing and recording music?
SHELBY: I love this question! I’m a protein girly, so Barebells or Chomps beef sticks are staples. Random snack that I only have in the studio or at the airport – combos specifically the pizzeria flavor. I stay away from energy drinks so I’m not jittery. Tea is my best friend on studio days!
Q:When you aren’t writing music or performing, what is your absolute favorite way to spend a completely free day off?
SHELBY:I always try to convince myself that I’m a homebody, but that’s just not true. I get too antsy haha. I love exploring, trying a new restaurant, or being active whether it’s a hike, dance class, or Pilates!
Q:What can fans expect next from Shelby Cordell in terms of upcoming live performances, music videos, or larger projects?
SHELBY:I have a vault full of unreleased tracks spanning so many different vibes that I can’t wait to share! One song I’m especially excited about is a song I wrote about a guy I met at my hometown bar on New Year’s Eve. I know practically everyone in that town, so seeing a fresh face immediately caught my attention. We shared this movie-scene kiss right at midnight that felt like pure fate—even if living in two completely different worlds proved that real life isn’t always a fairytale.
