Review & Interview: “bitebybite” by PEAKS!

“Bitebybite” by PEAKS! hit streaming services on March 25, 2022. The song comes after the moderately successful “Black Guns / White Drugs” of 2021. Quick tempoed and electric, “bitebybite” is sure to get stuck in your head.

The song opens with a sound reminiscent of a video game. It’s electric and sounds like it would be a character’s chomping, “bitebybite”. This is a story of inner demons and being careful what you wish for. It’s a story of greed taking over. Bite. By. Bite. I feel like it could also represent depression taking over the mind. Especially with “I, I wanna get away” in the chorus and knowing how depression can eat away at the soul.

As PEAKS! puts it, “We crave things that we don’t have, we point fingers at people that have different opinions, we’re all convinced that we’re the next star to shine. We tried to portray this culture of individualism by building a very dark and intense atmosphere, where desires are demons waiting out there to eat us bite by bite. The song is designed to be a rollercoaster ride for the listener, putting you through all the highs and lows of those emotions.”

But how did “bitebybite” make me feel? Heard. Seen. Energized. These are just a few things that I felt while listening to this song. Watching the video with these emotions was definitely an experience. It’s a simple video with the band in a white room which moves to a red-light view and then to a similar view with neon lights in the background to represent a freak out. It’s as electric as the song is.

PEAKS! arranged and produced “bitebybite” entirely from their home studios after a Zoom session during the pandemic. The duo hail from the North of Italy and have already had moderate success with their music all over the world. Their first single was featured during the opening of last season’s ‘Love Island’ in the UK.

Q&A with PEAKS!

Q: “Bitebybite” has been playing in my head for hours on end! What inspired the song?

PEAKS!: Musically speaking, the song has been mainly inspired by the 90s electronic rock music. Lyrically, the song has been inspired by dystopian literature and cinematography. We’ve always been fascinated by the psychological aspect of human beings. So we decided to put in lyrics the constant desire and craving for something that we all face everyday, especially now that we’re drowned in contents and projection of who we should be or what we should have in order to be perfect.

Q: What was your favorite part about making the “bitebybite” music video?

PEAKS!: We had so much fun during the shooting of “bitebybite”. We collaborated with a very close friend, Edoardo Giuliani (go check his works), cause we really love our DIY attitude and we studied together the best way to portray the meaning of the song.

We ended up with this “white torture” idea to give the spectator the idea of emptiness and deprivation of human senses.

The best part was shooting the scenes where we go out of our mind and we act like psycho. We turned up the volume and played some 90s metal classics like Slipknot and we decided to go with the flow, screaming at the camera crawling on the floor. It was funny cause we couldn’t act serious for more than 5 seconds before start laughing.

Q: We love the vibe you have! Who are your biggest influences?

PEAKS!: Oh, that is a very hard question. We grew up with the rock classic, but we’re very influenced by the 90s wave of rock and electronic music. We’re trying to have no boundaries when it comes to write and produce a song, that’s why we’re trying to blend as many genres as we can. Some of the artists that we love the most nowadays are Bring Me The Horizon, grandson, UPSAHL, K. Flay, The Neighbourhood.

Q: What has been one of the highlights of your music career so far?

PEAKS!: Probably being featured in Future Artists on BBC Radio 1 by Jack Saunders. But we can also mention being futured in the first episode of the last season Love Island UK (that was very unexpected) and being on the cover of some Spotify Playlists.

Q: If you were stranded on a desert island and could only have one album with you, what would it be?

PEAKS!: The Black Album by Metallica

Q: What’s next for you?

PEAKS!: This 2022 is all about trying to get back what we’ve been deprived by the last 2 years. Play as much as we can (we didn’t play a single gig yet because of the pandemic) and release our first EP which is going to be out before the end of the summer. We really can’t wait to be on the road to do what we love the most.
