“Sugar” by Madeline Rosene

Sugar, Madeline Rosene, single, song, music, music review, review

Get a load of “Sugar” by Ohioan (or Buckeye) turned Angeleno Madeline Rosene. Pen to paper, Rosene touched on the harrowing side of sugar relationships (sugar baby, sugar daddy), pulling from personal experiences and inserting direct quotes.

Don’t be fooled by the title! The song’s tone is anything but sugary sweet. Rosene assumes this affirmative tone while singing lyrics as if she’s indignantly spewing out the words many in sugar-dating relationships have heard and didn’t deserve to hear.

And the rebel-style instrumental arrangement complements her bold lyrics and vocals. The decision to strip the verses to percussion and guitar was genius because it zooms into the solemnity in Rosene’s lyrics and voice, so we take her words seriously. The “Raised On Porn” singer has listeners in a chokehold during the verses before allowing them to gasp for air during the chorus as “Sugar” sonically expands with ferocious instrumentation.

“Sugar” is a genius work of art part of Rosene’s 2022 album, “Everyday Existential Crisis.” Check out “Sugar” and her other works!
