Q&A with Extra T-Rex

Q: Extra T-Rex, thank you so much for taking the time to talk about “Keep It ‘Ever Wild.” It means a lot to me. I want to know what inspired the track.

EXTRA T-REX: First of all, I’m delighted by your interest in this interview. The inspiration for this song came from creating it the day after a club outing where I’d done a lot of dancing. I started by playing drums with a stick on electronic percussion, with the aim of stirring the listener’s instincts. I also wanted the listener to lose all notions of space and time with these numerous synthesizers. The lyrics are an invitation to run through the jungle like animals, to rediscover your primal instincts, to turn more to your dinosaur side than your alien side.

Q: “Keep It ‘Ever Wild” was beautifully produced! What did you enjoy most about making this?

EXTRA: Honestly, it was when I recorded the lead vocals with the bassist of the Brit-pop band Koola Shaker in Belgium. I had the impression that he had the world’s ears and that I could let loose with my voice. He taught me a lot of things about production that I was able to apply afterward: vocal harmonies and the use of delay effects on vocals to give the track an even more EDM feel. I thank him from the bottom of my heart!

Q: In your own words, how would you describe the music that you typically create?

EXTRA: It’s a dance music that oscillates between what I listened to in my mother’s womb and now. It bridges the musical currents of the late 80s and everything I’ve listened to since, like techno. Eurodance and grunge have also left their mark on me. I call my music Deep-Wave. It is a mix between Depeche Mode’s New Wave and the Deep House I used to dance to in Paris in the 2010s. I’d describe it as liberating and epic with a touch of melancholy.

Q: From the sounds of “Keep It ‘Ever Wild,” you’ve got a knack for making music. What got you into it?

EXTRA: I’ve always been very sensitive to the sounds I can hear. It made me want to make others hear them, too. I started singing in a school choir at the age of 6 and playing drums at the age of 9. My ancestors were music lovers, so that was part of it, too. So, when I had the time to get started and the necessary technologies at my disposal, it all happened very quickly.

Q: What did you grow up listening to, and has your music preference changed or evolved?

EXTRA: The radio with a lot of 80s music, which I hated at the time. My parents’ records, especially Queen, The Who, The Beatles and The Doors, which I really liked. And at village parties there was Eurodance, so I couldn’t stop dancing! When I was younger, I thought I’d be doing pop-rock, but as I got older, I got out of the countryside and played with other musicians who played other styles.

I played with a keyboardist and singer who was inspired by Radiohead and a bassist who played electro-pop tunes, which brought me back in touch with the tribal accents of electronic music. So it’s an evolution, realizing that there are great tracks everywhere and that you just have to dig deep.

Q: What’s the best part of pursuing music?

EXTRA: It allows me to express myself, to vibrate, to make others vibrate and to make them express themselves in turn. Music is an exchange, and that’s what I prefer.

Q: How would you describe yourself as an artist to your listeners?

EXTRA: I would describe myself as an inspirer of body and spirit. For me, creating is as much therapy as it is shamanism. I make thought dance with the aim of alleviating suffering and allowing the soul to rise. If I’ve ended up here, it’s to play my part.

Q: Speaking of listeners, what would you like to say to them?

EXTRA: Thank you so much for listening to my song! Feel free to listen to others or follow me on social networks.
