“Humming“ by New State Masses

Brighton-based duo New State Masses’ latest track, “The Humming,” is an explosion of nostalgia. Coming off strong from the success of their debut single, the duo is proving they are just getting started. The synth-heavy instrumental and soaring vocals, along with the introspective lyrics about dealing with PTSD, make “The Humming” not only catchy, but an essential song.

“The Humming” was written and produced by the duo Peter Harwood and Matthew Parisi. They continued their collaboration with Agricultural Audio and Ben Hillier from their last track, “The People You Love.” The song, which feels like a blend of U2 and Bruce Springsteen, introduces a unique sound to the alternative pop/rock scene. The anthem begins strong right away, feeling like a colorful blast of emotions, as the melodic keys give the song a bittersweet feeling.

Lyrically, “The Humming” is a poignant story of battling with PTSD and all the many perplexing elements of it–not wanting to face the trauma, dealing with childhood memories, and anger. The song’s lyrics delve deep into the emotional turmoil of PTSD, making it a powerful and relatable narrative. PTSD feels as though every day is unfolding a new layer of trauma, but that doesn’t mean it has to define us, as the song so beautifully captures. Musically, the soaring guitars and exhilarating synth create a powerful energy of escapism but with a hopefulness of looking into the future.
