Q&A with Andrew Corbin and the Space Funk Odyssey
Q: For starters, I have to know where the name came from.
ANDREW CORBIN AND THE SPACE FUNK ODYSSEY: The Space Funk Odyssey was just something that came to my mind while daydreaming. I’ve always felt my music doesn’t quite fit into a specific genre, and the style of “space funk” kept coming to my mind. The Odyssey is an adventure, and for the moment, this type of music is the adventure I’m on. I’m sure it will evolve and change over time. So, a new name will be needed.
Q: Where did the inspiration for “Golden” come from?
ANDREW: I read The Old Soul’s Guidebook by Ainslie MacLeod, which talks about the different types of souls and soul ages of people and how that translates to their current lives. I thought it would be cool to bring that content to the musical realm.
Q: I love how warm and comforting “Golden” sounds from the cool instrumental elements and effects. What is your purpose behind creating the track?
ANDREW: The idea was to create a track that sounded like you were traveling through space. The various warping and bending-sounding effects are like portals or like you are passing by a star or anything else in the galaxy. I tried to layer synths and add FX, which helped give that feeling.
Q: I’d love it if you explained the meaning behind the song.
ANDREW: The meaning revolves around the idea of being an old soul. Someone who has lived probably 100s of lives on earth and has been everywhere and done almost everything. They are coming close to the end of their time on earth and are simply looking for a final beautiful ride filled with all the good stuff.
Q: What do you hope people take from listening to it?
ANDREW: I always hope listeners enjoy my songs. I have a lot of fun making them and I hope the good vibes translate to them. I really just want to spread positivity and the idea of expanding consciousness to more positive and uplifting places to as many people as possible.
Q: “Golden” is a part of your EP, “Futurefreak.” Congrats, by the way! What’s the theme behind the EP?
ANDREW: The theme of “Futurefreak” was to mash up a bunch of styles of music, like house, funk, pop, EDM, etc. and throw them in a blender to see what happens. It’s all the music I love right now, put together in a small package of sound.
Q: Are you going for a sophomore album?
ANDREW: I am ALWAYS working on new music. Every day, I spend time working on something new. The first album was called “The First Odyssey,” which I recommend giving a listen to. It’s pretty cool, too. Then, “Futurefreak.” Right now, I have about seven singles that will be released every two weeks for the next little while, so stay tuned. I am also putting together an instrumental album at the moment.
Q: Any words for your listeners?
ANDREW: We have a chance to alter and expand the consciousness of our planet. A chance to make things better for everyone around us. Imagine the world if everyone knew they were safe, secure and loved, no matter what! Imagine how peaceful and kind everyone would be. How easy life could be.
We need to band together and collect our talents to create content, art, music, drama, whatever you want to call it. We just create with the intention to improve the lives of everyone who might come in contact with it. Keep supporting people through troubles, and keep sharing with communities the necessary knowledge and skills to assist the collective conscious evolution. That is the goal. Vibrate the change we desire, and the universe shall shift to meet us!
