Embracing a new sound and newfound independence, Steven Winton has released his single “Outlaws,” out now. The musician was best known for his work as the frontman in the electropop group “Fridge Magnets.” With that group, he would play festivals like T in the Park and Lovebox, which included artists like Calvin Harris and Fatboy Slim. However, Winton took about a ten-year hiatus before deciding to reenter the music scene. He has come back with a new sound and an optimistic attitude. “Outlaws” is not only the introduction to his solo career, but the first single from his debut album.
The indie pop track has an infectious melody and well thought out lyrics. Winton is a skilled musician, crafting all the words and music heard on the track on his own. He has a lot of intention in his large spacious guitars that weave in nicely with his falsetto, while the verses are able keep a steady pace for his conversational tone.
When asked to describe himself as an artist, Winton shared, “[I would describe myself as] an amusing raconteur desperate to let the world know his story through the love of melody and sunshine.”
This reflects beautifully in the chorus when he sings, “so let’s go dancing in the sun / and chase the blues away / and lets set sail for whiskey town / we’ll leave Paris for the day.”
Overall, Winton has such a brightness to his sound that is the perfect pick up to keep the good vibes going through the colder months. His alternative meets pop is all his own, and it is exciting to see how this will continue in his upcoming debut solo album.
