Jamie Michael’s debut single “SIRIUS” is a self-empowering message of love. Her candid lyrics suggest that it is ok to want more from the people surrounding you. “Sirius” wants to normalize self-love. Michael, through her song, wants to be treated with the same respect she treats those around her. She is, in fact, as bright as the brightest burning star that is Sirius. There is a double meaning with the title of the track, suggesting to the listener that the singer is very “serious” about what she is saying.
The Montreal-based artist delivers her unapologetic message to the backdrop of catchy, electronic dance rhythms. Her voice is melodic and clearly informed by formal musical training. According to Hanna Kowal writing for Pop Passion, Michael majored in Professional Music at Berklee College of Music.
“Sirius” starts off with a cute melodic sequence delivered through what sounds like a Phaser effect. The pre-chorus creates an effective build-up, which carries hints of Ariana Grande and other modern R&B artists. By the time the chorus arrives, Michael delivers, through colorful imagery, a triumphant realization of an ongoing and universal struggle within her. “Oh, this fire I feel burning deep inside / In the midnight sky, a beaming light / shining bright like Sirius.”
The track’s music video shows Michael trapped in a futuristic-looking rope light, symbolic of her own struggle for freedom, artistic and otherwise. The mood of the video and track is modern, while also considering other audiences who may be unfamiliar with the larger electronic dance genre. For these listeners, “Sirius” is definitely a great introduction, and listeners will want more from the young singer.
