“West Coast” by Katie Belle

Atlanta-born pop sensation Katie Belle has long been known to her fans not only for her memorable vocals and earworm hooks but also for the ambition she exudes through every aspect of her life. While her roots lie in the South, she pines for the limelight and found a little closer to the Pacific in her newest single “West Coast.” Far from another song musing about sunshine and fame, the single tells the story of a person following their dreams and being true to themselves as an artist and a human being.

The piece begins with a soft and sentimental piano tune, setting the tone for an emotional narrative. As Belle’s vocals quickly begin the story, the pensive tambour in her words conveys the gravity of this situation. She begins with the words “East coast is heavy on my brain, I told my Mom I’m going far away. I heard a song that took me to LA” and we immediately feel Belle’s passion through our speakers.

Determined not to let her window close on her dreams, we empathize with Belle and the path she has chosen to go down. While few choose to leave what is known and comfortable to them, Belle makes it clear that anything short of satisfaction is not enough. Her character is put on full display throughout the anthem, vowing to seize her opportunity while retaining her sense of self, best put in her own words “I never said I would sell my soul, but it’s calling my name.”
