Mock’s connection to, and love for, her home state of Maine is sewn into every song on the EP, but most particularly in the opening track “Acadia.” Named after the famous national park, which is known for its sprawling nature and magnificent views, this song tells the struggle of leaving behind a place you love- of chasing new things and questioning if that place will still feel the same when you come back. Emotive strings and haunting melodies craft a bittersweet landscape that helps moving lyrics like “I don’t know if my heart will last this way” hit even harder.
This EP bends and marries genres, ranging from folk ballads to catchy pop songs, and the eclectic sonics add to the lyrical narratives about wandering and wondering. Mock explores throughout the EP, and particularly in the atmospheric ballad “Ribs,” how to reflect on who you were, define who you are, and become who you will be, and what all of that means in terms of fitting yourself into the world.
The closing track, “Rocky Shore,” is Mock’s take on a classic, twangy folk song about traveling. After searching for home throughout the EP, she realizes in this last song that maybe her home by the “rocky shore” is the most important one. She sings “make me who I was before,” wishing to return to the steady feeling of belonging by the shore that has always welcomed her home.
