“Cherry Chapstick” is a catchy alt rock track that explores the struggle of ending a relationship that has had a lot of back and forth. In a relationship where you keep coming back to each other, it’s difficult to find that closure and officially accept that you shouldn’t see them anymore. Chris Quesnel’s vulnerable lyrics and expressive delivery show him coming to the realization that no matter their tendency to fall back into each other’s arms, he doesn’t want to taste his ex’s cherry chapstick ever again.
With simple but impactful lyrics like “nothing else left to talk about,” Quesnel captures how it feels to have the strange realization that you can care so deeply about someone who is objectively not good for you. Even though all of the good times are still in his memory, he knows they have nothing left to talk about because their future together is not healthy or realistic. He is trying to tell himself “I think I’m better off alone,” to convince himself independence is better than harmful love.
Lively production, cathartic melodies, and great guitar riffs set the scene for this relatable storytelling. Heavy drum hits match Quesnel’s determination to let go of this ex, and calmer sections with less dense production let the emotion of that decision settle in. Using the idea that he doesn’t want to taste her cherry chapstick anymore as the main hook of the song cleverly heightens the emotion of the track. It’s such a small detail from the relationship, but it continues to stay with him.
