This emo pop rock track is beautifully cathartic and self-deprecating, offering a relatable anthem for anyone who just doesn’t feel good enough sometimes. “17” by Koizumi was written by lead singer Josie after she attended a concert and went home feeling inadequate and unsure of herself. With big swelling electric guitars and grungy beats, this song is reminiscent of your favorite 2000s pop rock bands, while also bringing a fresh and exciting take on the genre, as Koizumi also draws influence from some Japanese acts.

If you’re a musician, you know going to a concert can elicit some strange feelings of both inspiration and jealousy. You admire the artist on stage in a different way from your peers, and can even start feeling jealous because you wish it was you. Even if you’re not a musician, though, being amongst a crowd of people watching someone talented offers plenty of chances for you to compare yourself to others and end up feeling insecure. Koizumi sings “if only I wasn’t such a loser in the sea of faces” to explore that feeling of being overlooked and unimportant.

The dense and energetic chorus and the four on the floor kick increases anticipation and gets your adrenaline high. It allows you to really just sit in your frustration and yell along to try and let it out. After saying she’s been having this feeling since being seventeen, the instruments drop out as Josie gives a dispirited “ugh.” It’s a fun moment where you can feel her exasperation- followed by a cool whining guitar riff that takes us into the last chorus of the song.
