“Az Zagros Ta Zuiderzee“ by Marvash

“Az Zagros Ta Zuiderzee” is an intricate instrumental EP from the talented Iranian Dutch group Marvash. The EP contains six tracks, but really this EP is one continuous performance divided by name only. Marvash effortlessly and beautifully blends Persian and Dutch music styles to create a listening experience you are very unlikely to find anywhere else. “Az Zagros Ta Zuiderzee” contains danceable, uptempo moments, as well as introspective, meandering melodies, showcasing the impressive versatility and creativity Marvash has to offer.

The opening chapter of this EP, “Ebb & Flow” is intimate and anticipatory, with slow rippling rhythms and cymbal crashes that make you wait for the rhythm to drop in. Hints of melody and drums that are present in later chapters swirl through this first track, ramping up towards the end to prepare the listener for the more predictable and steady rhythms that arrive in the second track, “Dena.” The Persian santur takes the lead in most of these chapters, offering intricate and captivating melodies that give this EP its charm.

Because all of the tracks on “Az Zagros Ta Zuiderzee” make up one twelve minute performance, this EP is notably cohesive, flowing naturally from chapter to chapter, while allowing each track to still contain its own mood and story. Recurring motifs and balanced arrangements are self-referential and comforting, while allowing different instruments and emotions to take the stage throughout the EP. From the drum solos in “The Drums of Moresnet” to the rapid santur in “Damavand,” Marvash provides an unforgettable sonic journey with this EP.
