“American Dreaming“ by Jess McAvoy

“American Dreaming” is a moving alt rock album that draws on the classic storytelling methods of folk music and the catchy melodies of contemporary pop to create a unique listening experience that showcases the unreplicable talent of artist Jess McAvoy. This album is introspective, vulnerable, and real, drawing the listener into a relatable, emotional landscape as McAvoy explores their path through life, and how it has shaped their identity and artistry.

The title of the album comes from the second track of the album, “The Fool,” heard in the line where McAvoy references people in power “telling lies and selling us American dreaming.” This track is a look into societal tension and community unrest, often as a result of disillusioned citizens who were promised better. Music is a cathartic and effective outlet for expressing frustration with a current culture, and countless songs have tackled subjects of protest and resistance. McAvoy joins the brave voices calling for change with this song, with lines like “we don’t look to be learning from our mistakes” displaying an indignance towards selfish and power hungry people repeating the same mistakes that have already been proven to hurt others.

“The Prophet” is another stand out track on the album, closing “American Dreaming” with intimate acoustic guitars and some of the most vulnerable lyrics in this body of work. McAvoy reflects on their growth throughout their life, the strength that they cultivated within themself. The line “the burning only makes me bright now that I can see into the night” is particularly poignant, offering comfort to those who may be experiencing a dark time that one day the night will not seem so endlessly dark.
