“Skarlet” by freya from the north is a dreamy EP with indie rock rhythms, transportive production, and visceral lyrics. freya from the north showcases her eclectic, yet cohesive style, as well as her unique artistic vision in these captivating songs. From enveloping synths to booming rhythms to grungy electric guitars, each track on “Skarlet” creates a one of a kind sonic landscape that pulls you into the story and doesn’t let you go.
The wide atmosphere of the first track, “Lucky (Had My Tights On)” sets the stage for the cocoon of sounds that this EP displays. Freya is an imaginative artist from Copenhagen, Denmark, and draws on her Nordic roots when creating her music. The mystical, almost spiritual, inspiration from Norse mythology weaves its way through these tracks, particularly in the closing track, “Fjord Song.” The first half of this song is made up primarily of oscillating, echoing vocal layers that take on the texture of a chanted prayer. As more melodic instrumentation joins in the song later, the atmosphere grows and grows, making the listener feel like they are ascending into a heavenly realm.
Lyrically, much of the EP sees Freya vulnerably dissecting her relationships to other people and how her personal experiences have shaped her. She examines unwanted pregnancy, violence, and a waning relationship. The lyrics provide enough specificity for the emotions to deeply impact the listener, but at times remain vague enough to allow the listener to apply their own meanings to the music. freya from the north cements her place as a meaningful musician with the meandering melodies, raw lyrics, and fluid arrangements of “Skarlet.”
