Italian multi-instrumentalist, producer, and torchbearer of modern progressive metal, Gus DeFelice, has had a musical journey spanning decades, perfecting his craft and his unique sound every step of the way. As he reflects on a lifetime of musical exploration and excellence, his focus has turned to the upcoming release of his most ambitious record to date, “The Sound of Inevitability,” a full-length concept album set for release later this year that tackles some of the most universal existential themes of existence such as death, change, and evolution. In anticipation of this groundbreaking work, Defelice has given fans a taste of what is to come by teasing “Starlight,” a single that anchors the sentimental merit of the entire body of work.
The piece begins with an ominous backdrop of sound that builds in volume and anticipation throughout the introductory stanza. A triumphant electric guitar then plucks reverberantly and the world of the music is built around us. As the percussion appears soon after, we feel the music take shape as the instruments play off each other with a great sense of musical symbiosis.
The resulting product is enthralling, to say the least. At every stage of the track, the instrumentally motivated single strikes a balance between melodically centered and thoroughly stimulating. While steeped in a heavy tone, there is an inescapable comfort in the direction of the music that feels enchanting and at times hypnotic in its delivery.
