“I Might” by Edie Yvonne

“I Might” by Edie Yvonne is a dark and captivating pop track about a complicated relationship. Sixteen-year-old singer-songwriter Edie Yvonne makes dreamy pop music, drawing on indie rhythms and soft rock arrangements to create a fresh sound that showcases her unique artistry. This style builds the backbone of “I Might,” with impactful metaphors and intimate vocals effectively adding emotion overtop of the sonic landscape.

Acoustic guitar strumming and unnerving plucked melodies open the song, setting the scene for the tense track that is to follow. The opening lines, “heard you bark but didn’t see a bite, left my mark in the center of your eye” immediately tell the listener that the relationship between these two people is unhealthy, yet hard to define. It seems they both have some power of the other, but also are both suffering at the hands of the other. This kind of narrative writing, along with metaphors like “holding your thoughts in my hands” and “the air is burned with tired flames,” showcase Yvonne’s aptitude for songwriting that takes “I Might” to the next level.

Steady drums, subtle electric guitars wrapped in feedback, and grungy, textured guitars in the chorus help the production to match the emotion of the lyrics. This chaotic, messy, slightly unpredictable arrangement mirrors the uncertainty in the relationship as Yvonne grapples with her next move. Backing vocals offer ear candy while the journey from dense to sparse moments in the song keep the listener on their toes as Yvonne brings them into her world.
