“Passion” by Coma Beach

Torchbearers of the modern alt-punk scene, Würzburg, Germany-based band Coma Beach has enjoyed a notable run since debuting their music a few short years ago. Musical purists to their core, their work embodies the traditional messages of first-wave punk in every way. Fresh off the heels of their last album “A Madman’s Dream/Mind Descending,” which garnered an incredible reception on its own merit after its release last year, they seek to continue building off this momentum with their latest EP “Passion/Bliss.” Anchored behind one of the titular singles off the record, its opening song “Passion” begins this playlist with a melodic and intimate taste of the project’s abilities.

The piece begins with a single embellished guitar cord strummed reverberantly as the line “The passion I once had is now the ashes in my vault” is narrated. The same guitar continues to play for a few more cords before the first sung lyrics are introduced with the opening line “I’m looking out of the window which consists of fragments. I’m going out of the door where the axe of death passes me its hand.” As the music progresses, the tempo eventually hastens verse by verse as we feel the artist’s relationship with their own burnout imprinted with the lines as it builds to a crescendo of raw emotional reflection.

An existential ballad at its core, the single manifests the very doctrine of classic punk. Far from a melancholy musing, the piece plays as a reflection of purpose while living in a world that can at times weigh on your soul to a terrifying degree.
