“Want That“ by Dawning

“Want That” by Dawning is an intense electronic pop track, merging ear-worm melodies with meaningful lyrics over a dense, upbeat arrangement to craft a captivating sonic journey from start to finish. Dawning tackles the overwhelming power of consumerism and capitalism in this song, talking about how the rich and powerful have created a society where owning material items somehow increases a person’s intrinsic value. Even though this is a ridiculous sentiment, it is hard not to fall victim to it because it is so entrenched in modern culture. Dawning offers a fun groove, along with thought-provoking lyrics, for a one of a kind track.

Deep pulsing synths, unique sonic textures, and huge ambient synth chords make up the backbone of this song. Rippling sound effects and unexpected melodic moments keep the song fresh and intriguing as the ethereal, filtered vocal consistently delivers catchy melodies. The chorus sings “tell me if you want that…’cause it’s all yours” to capture this idea that anything a person wants can be had- as long as they’ve got the money. The tag line, “take as much as you can” sums up the selfish nature that consumerism encourages.

Even though “Want That” is a critique of consumerist culture, Dawning doesn’t think being a consumer is a moral failing. With lines like “stuck in a daydream,” he acknowledges how it’s not really possible to exist outside of this society, even though it means contributing to the damage capitalism causes to the environment and vulnerable people. It’s a song that makes you think, as well as a song that makes you dance.
