The lyrics in the chorus talk about how Reynolds feels like he is “great at helping everybody else.” Yet, he doesn’t find that same compassion for himself. He wonders why he can’t help himself like he helps others, repeating “why” over and over to show that desperation and confusion he is experiencing. It’s a common question, yet one that is hard to answer. Reynolds offers a more positive perspective in the bridge with lines like “I take the rough with the smooth,” reminding the listener to try and accept the good and bad in life and be willing to help themselves.
Bouncing drums and upbeat guitars open the song, immediately bringing you into a chugging groove that carries you through the song. A particularly fun element is the trombone (played by talented jazz musician and composer Tom “Bones” Malone”), which matches the vocal melodies in some parts, as well as having its own ear candy moments. Towards the end of the song, a repetitive and building bridge strips down the arrangement, then launches into dense instrumentation, featuring a warbling electric guitar solo that is riveting and unpredictable, matching all of the chaotic emotions of this story.
