“Debo Ray” is the self-titled debut album from Boston based artist Debo Ray, a singer-songwriter that has an ear for blending genres and telling stories. The album is made up of ten original songs that mostly center around R&B rhythms, but weave in pop, hip-hop, jazz, and more. Each track has a uniquely captivating sonic landscape, but exists cohesively within the body of work at the same time. With themes of self-growth, toxic relationships, and introspection, Debo Ray delivers a compelling and meaningful introduction to her artistry with this album.
Throughout “Debo Ray,” we hear soulful vocals that offer dynamic performances, moving from warm, lilting melodies to growling attitude to catchy, rap style delivery. Ray uses her voice as an instrument itself, layered harmonies and throwing in ad libs that constantly provide the listener with ear candy. Grooving bass and irresistible drum rhythms form the backbone of these tracks, with emotional strings, piano, or guitar often dancing across the arrangements as well.
The opening track, “Tell Me What You Want,” is the perfect introduction to “Debo Ray.” Walking, funky bass lines and the tapping rhythm carry you across the track as its ear worm melodies and unpredictable song form craft satisfying twists and turns. Another standout on the album is the closer, “Take That,” in which Ray displays her gospel roots through her impressive vocal performance. With lyrics like “stand back, get out of the way, make my own path, oh I got something to say,” this ambitious self-love anthem is a poignant ending to the album.
