Q: “Karma Collects” is an energetic and captivating track. What was your creative process in making this song?
KAHLIL: It took me a little bit to tap into the track. I knew I loved the beat, but was at a loss for a while. I had written a note of the “September Rain…soft landing hard loss…etc” just as a little exercise in contrast and imagery, but then showering a melody popped up and boom – the verses flowed and the bridge came quick so yea. Mulled it over for a while, but when it came it was flowing.
Q: Did any real-life events occur in your life that inspired the song?
KAHLIL: Fortunately I haven’t had extensive experience with vengeful/petty exes, but people choosing to put out negative energy to feel better about themselves definitely isn’t anything new.
Q: Was there a pivotal moment in your life when you decided to follow your path as a musician?
KAHLIL: I’ve always been on the path. Definitely a few decisions – moving to LA, reworking my relationship and perspective on what it means to be an artist and do it “professionally” – were elements. But mostly as I grow as a person and a spirit, the fact that I’m on this path gets clearer and clearer.
Q: Who would you most like to collaborate with, if it could be anyone in the world?
KAHLIL: Prince, Sade, Kendrick, J. Cole, Qendresa, any UK artists really, I’ve been fortunate to collab with homies back in NC like Kam Doja, Volz, Cozy
Q: In your own words, how would you describe the music that you typically create?
KAHLIL: I’d say it’s a fusion of pop and r&b with hip-hop undertones.
Q: What projects are currently in the works?
KAHLIL: 2024 I released nothing so that I could prep for this year. Right now I’m currently dropping a song month focusing on building a base so that’s the project of 2024/ 2025. Build, build, build, play shows, be out and about. It’s been a practice in balance too because I need to be better about carving out time to rest and create.
