“Things Found In Books” by Yvonne Lyon and Boo Hewerdine is a moving folk album that tells the stories of many different people, weaving together a tapestry of ordinary lives with powerful effects. This album was inspired by a notice board in a second-hand bookshop in Scotland. The notice board is littered with old letters, photographs, and all kinds of other memories. Lyon and Hewerdine used these memories to craft these narratives, giving a voice to forgotten love and old connections. With beautiful vocals, lovely arrangements, and compelling lyrics, “Things Found In Books” is an album you don’t want to miss.
The title track opens the album with pretty piano and cinematic strings moving over plucked guitar and subtle horns. Lyrics like “an unfinished love letter that said he can’t forget her” and “a ticket for the metro that someone couldn’t let go” name a few things found in books that seem simple, but actually hold important memories to whichever stranger they used to belong to. The steadily walking rhythm matches the steadily progressing narrative, making for a thought-provoking and emotional landscape.
Another standout song on the album is “Kate And The Missing Trees,” which tells the story of a misunderstood and overlooked woman. The line “they said she had an old soul, but they never understood her ways” shows the mystery of this woman, who to most people seemed more like “a figure dancing in the night under the missing trees.” Luckily, this ambient and transportive song immortalizes the woman so often forgotten.
