“They promised us there would be flying cars“ by You Me & Kyle

“They promised us there would be flying cars” by You Me & Kyle is a thought-provoking indie rock album that provides dynamic arrangements and compelling narratives that are impossible to look away from. This indie rock duo from Columbus, Ohio is made up of Henry Hutton and Tony Sharpe, who originally met at a Star Trek convention, and have since merged their talents to create the one of a kind songs on this eight-track album. Most of this album collaboration was done completely remotely, speaking to the clear vision and sense of artistry that these musicians have. 

The album opens with the track “The Side Of The Road,” which slams in with captivating electric guitar melodies and thrumming bass. The guitars provide both rhythm and ear candy, pulling you through the arrangement with ease. Energetic drums and an impassioned vocal performance are reminiscent of classic rock songs, making for a sound that is both nostalgic and fresh. The narrator sings “I’ve got nothing to do, sitting here on the side of the road” and “I’m just killing time, my friend, before time can kill me,” exploring that all too familiar feeling of hopeless wandering. 

Another standout on the album is the closing track, “Let You Down,” which opens with a riveting electric guitar riff that returns several times throughout the song, upping the tension and energy each time. In this track, You Me & Kyle tackle feelings of unworthiness. Lines like “I’m overrated, I’m under hated, I know I’m jaded” and “I’m just gonna let you down” give voice to all of our deepest fears.
